Harold Bishop

Harold Bishop (played by Ian Smith)

Harold runs the General Store with Lou Carpenter. He lives at number 24 with his granddaughter Sky and his friend Lou although Lou recently moved out after a falling out. He has been widowed twice – most recently to his beloved childhood sweetheart Madge Ramsay. He is father to the late David Bishop and the late Kerry Bishop. He has two grandchildren Sky the daughter of Kerry and the late Serena who was fathered by David. He has a son-in-law Joe Mangel who was married to his daughter until she died and a daughter in law the late Liljana Bishop; he also has a step-grandson Toby Mangel.

When Harold came to Ramsey Street in 1988 after meeting up again with his childhood sweetheart Madge Mitchell he was shocked as he also met up with his old enemy Lou Carpenter who was also after the affections of Madge but Harold won her heart and married her in 1989. They were happy until they took a holiday in 1992 and Harold got washed away to sea, and Madge was left to bury her beloved husband just 3 short years after marrying him.

So you can imagine Madge’s shock when in 1997 her best friend Helen Daniels discovered Harold was actually alive and well and suffering from amnesia he had been living the past five years as ‘Ted’ so they were reunited and even got re married they were such a happy couple until Madge passed away from cancer in 2001. Harold had a "thing" for Rosie Hoyland and a brief romance with Ruby Dwyer but no one can fill the gap left by his dear Madge.

In 2003 Harold suffered from a stroke and had a personality change where he gave up being a vegetarian started drinking alcohol and gambling and had a thing for the ladies which gave the residents quite a shock but it didn’t take too long for the old Harold to re surface again and find his religion.

Harold is a pillar of the community who has cared for many over the years including more recently Tad Reeves and Paul McClain who he and Madge adopted but nothing made him happier than having his family around him again when Sky came to live with him and his son David (who he didn’t have a particularly good relationship with) and his family moved in with him – so you can imagine his heartbreak when recently the plane that David, Lil and Serena was on was bombed and they died. The plane was courtesy of Paul Robinson who is a local hated businessman and the bomb was meant for him so as Harold’s family died but Paul his girlfriend and daughter survived Harold blinded by grief tried to take his revenge on Paul by attempting to kill him and when that failed he started a terror campaign but eventually again his faith won out and he saw what he did was very wrong and confessed but now he has got Paul trying to drive him and his partner out of business by starting a rival coffee shop and getting Harold’s friends and neighbours to work for him.
