Karl Kennedy is the local G.P in Erinsborough. Since he moved out of his marital home he has lived in Eden Hills. He has an ex – wife Susan Smith, three grown up children from their marriage Malcolm, Libby and Billy, a deceased son in law Drew Kirk and a grandson Ben from Libby's marriage to Drew. Karl is also a recovering alcoholic who was a budding musician in a band called "The Right Prescription" until Susan's dislike for his music put an early end to his musical career.

Karl and Susan were a very happily married couple until she accepted a teaching post in the country and Karl found himself becoming attracted to his secretary Sarah Beaumont. Once Susan found out about this, she threw him out of the family home and it took a lot to convince her how sorry he was and to take him back but eventually he did. They were blissfully happy again until Susan had an accident after slipping on some milk, causing amnesia. She didn't recognise her home or her family. It seemed that the marriage was over, until her memory began to return. Later that year, Karl and Susan renewd their wedding vows.

Karl had his head turned by newcomer Isabelle Hoyland though and things were never the same for husband and wife again. He left Susan in 2003 and started seeing Izzy, but when she announced she was pregnant this was the nail in the coffin for their already dead marriage, as Susan was left devastated and a bitter legal battle commenced. Izzy had a miscarriage and Karl vowed to stand by her. He and Izzy planned their wedding but she stood him up at the altar when she had an attack of nerves, although she later returned and he took her back again, however a few months down the line Karl realised just how deceitful Izzy was when Susan found out the baby wasn't really his and gave Izzy an ultimatum. Izzy told him that the baby hadn't been his but also added a lie in there saying that she had been raped by Gus and that is why she didn't tell him the truth. Karl took her back, until he overheard her admitting to Max that it was a lie and he cut her out of his life for good.
